Yesterday I took apart a HF 12-36 lathe into hande-able chunks and roped it 12' down into the ground floor of the barn. Today it was re-assembly day... didn't go too bad, till I plugged the power head. Ran good, but speed was wonky, it has a split shieve speed adjust lever that wasn't locking like it should. Put it back together anyway, and got to lookin at the control handle, piss poor design, handle goes on with a set screw, has 2 pins, one that rides in a slot, and the one that moves with the handle, to lock it in any of 10 positions... The lock pin was sheared off flush, and I found the other piece, in hole #1. Hammered out the roll pins to remove the remains, turns out to be a metric 1/4 pin, that has about a 3/16 (slightly less, but I gots a metal lathe). Anyway took a 1/4" bolt, lopped off the sides of the head in the lathe, and then I made the first mistake, stuck it in the cordless drill, ground down the bizness end with the 8" bench grinder, oops, shoulda drilled the cross hole first. Had a devil of a time drillin that cross hole on a 1/2 long, 1/4"dia shaft, held in place in the vee block by my fat finger... Gettin close to the end of drilling the starter hole (1/8"), I had visions of another mauled finger, so I shut it down afore the bit was due to break through t'other side. Got to thinkin there has to be a safer way, so I drilled a hole the size of the narrow end of said pin, into a piece of scrap plywood, hammered the pin in, and put the block in a vise, and shimmed under the big end of the pin, with some blocks of wood, and finished the job! Mighta took longer, but loads safer...
Got the lathe back together and workin for the cost of a 2" x 1/4" diameter bolt. Turned a small tree branch crotch into a vase blank, too wet for anything fancy, but figgered out mosta my tooling from the smaller lathe is the same size, so there's that...
Here's a vid of the same model, you can see the handle in question, to the right of the on/off switch...
