I might be wrong but as i understand it many of those old 'toons" had a underlying political message that dealt with the problems of the times. Maybe just the consperiousy thinker in me.

If you want to watch a cartoon that was written with the jokes aimed at adults, watch some of the old "Rocky & Bullwinkle Show". I watched it a lot as a kid and laughed at the gags, then I watched some of them again as an adult and I got the jokes.
