The main idea was to go over to my friends house and cut a pecan tree down. It is close to his garage and has worn out its welcome after dropping a limb that just about made it down to his little BMW roadster. The first thing was to trim off a limb that I feared would cause problems with it landing in a controlled manner. I was afraid it would come down on that limb and send it right back into the garage. So, he has a Stihl pole saw to use. We finally got it running, poorly, and cut off one little limb and it quit altogether. It has one of those engines with the overhead valves. I remember working on it before, putting on a new carburetor, and it never ran right, and I thought there mighta been something wrong internally. well, we finally decided to check the spark, and there was little to none. Had a donor for a different coil and it didn’t work ( maybe a bad coil was the reason it quit running, too) So, we go buy a new coil @ $52 and sure enough, it runs, and runs good! By that time, it was late, so the tree still stands. It is a large tree, over 3 feet in diameter where we are cutting. Tomorrow we shall see if my big Echo saw will handle a 36 inch bar!

I have had issues with Stihl saws lately. One was a friend's who treats a saw like he was using a sledge hammer. It was visibly battle scared all over. I talked to myself before I started and made me be methodical about diagnosis. Surprised myself when I determined that the coil was dead. I ordered a noname coil from eBay and while I waited for the new coil to arrive, I cleaned that saw up from stem to stern. I put the new coil in and waited for him to stop by to attempt to crank it. My shoulder was still in a harness at the time. That big bruiser one handed that 26 inch Stihl and it fired off on the first pull. I think it was scared not to. (Oh yea, the coil was ~$15.) Now my Stihl Farm boss is getting real cranky about starting. Likely the coil. However, if I fix it I might have to use it.

My neighbor is the Stihl dealer. He does what he can for me, but, he says So many things are back ordered now. I ordered one of their new “Hexa” saw chains. We have no idea when, or even if I will get it. Of course the chain I ordered is a different gage from what is used on Stihl saws. That could be part of the problem.

My local Stihl fella is a real jackass to deal with.

We have one of that variety, too. I gotta want something awful bad to go in there. People seem to agree with me. But it is a big business. So somebody must like them.

I received a 034 for Christmas one year, we heated with wood at the time burnt 2 Rick a week, it was a good saw. So good a fellow decided he liked it along with some more of my tools and borrowed them for good in the middle of the night. Insurance only gave enough to buy the smaller 028 super. It cuts faster but isn’t as powerful as the 034. I guess I have had it close to 35 years or more now and so far only a few plugs and new gas lines twice and a carb clean. Not counting bars and chains I consider those wear items. It is at times harder to start but it is getting old like me lol

I bought a brand new 034 Super, paid $324 for it. It was just a bit heavy for me and it could be a pain to start, before I figured that out. The choke is a flapper in the air filter and if you move the lever slowly, it might not quite close it, you gotta snap it down. I finally found a situation that it was perfect for, a tree service brings me logs, I pick them up with the track loader from one end and make real quick firewood chunks on the pile.
Until I ran over it!

Yep Stihl chain saws are popular and other people like them, I lost one, I hope who ever has it now enjoys it I have had several Stihl saws, this winter I gave a 210 away, I always had trouble starting the miserable, no good, piece of junk, had it to the repair shop several times etc. still would not start good for me. The fella I gave it to messed with it a bit, I think put on a carberator from e-bay and it starts and runs great for him. I bought another 170 to replace it and starts easy and runs great.

The 170 is a great little saw , for the price. I have had several. Never bought one, people just give them to me, mostly not running, one of them just had the chain brake tripped……

Well, the big pecan tree is down, approximately where we wanted it. I was kinda surprised with it. This wood cuts pretty hard, is quite heavy, and not really wet, either. My friend heats with a little wood stove, and I would bet this one tree will keep him warm for 3 or 4 years, maybe even more. The big Echo saw has plenty of power for a 36 inch bar. We needed every inch of it, too. It’s funny, but that tree looks bigger on the ground than it did standing there
