Getting smarter? One of my helpers brought a big oak tree in and dumped it for me to make firewood out of. The 3 bottom logs are just entirely too big for me to handle, so, I have resorted to quartering them with a chainsaw. Then I can handle them without aggravating a hernia. Each stick of log is making 40 to 50 pieces of stove wood. Admittedly, I am making them a bit small, but, that’s what most of the yuppies want anymore. The sawdust “noodles” are getting kinda deep…..

A few years ago I took down a couple siberian elms at Mom's that had about 30" dia trunks. I think some of those logs got cut into 6 pieces so I could lift them into the truck. Ripping them lengthwise sure does make a pile doesn't it? Noodles is a good word for them.

I had the same issue last year with a 40" dead ash.

" "One of my helpers brought a big oak tree in and dumped it for me to make firewood out of." " I'm gonna have to look up what that word "helper" means.

Have noodled quite a few trunks over the years. Hate having to do it but sometimes it is the only option. Seems kinda hard on a saw. I know my saws gulp fuel when I have to noodle rounds down to a managable size.

Forgot to mention, I'm not a big fan of oak for farwood anyways. Takes way to long to dry for one thing. Dont seem to get any more heat from it than I do with ash or locust either. Not much oak around here for the taking anyways.

Does it pay to have a sharp Ripping Chain for the Saw for that operation?

I have often wondered if I got any more heat out of a wood stove than I put in to it. On our recent monthly natural gas bill was a notice saying that we were 15% higher than our area neighbors. I guess that means: I'm a winner! ( ... and I can walk around the house nekid.)

Does it pay to have a sharp Ripping Chain for the Saw for that operation? Noodleing is cutting in a differant direction than ripping. Ripping chains work for cutting lumber ,ike a saw mill would cut going against the grain. Noodleing is cutting with the grain and produces long slivers of wood that look like noodles rather than smaller chips and dust.

To be honest about it, I really don’t care for old pin oak, either. It is so wet and heavy, and rather stinky. It really should not be sold until it dries out, and that takes quite a while. BUT, my helper found this tree blown down in my wood lot, and he brought it up to the barnyard and deposited it. I turned him loose to cut some firewood for his momma, and he thought he was doing me a big favor. He had his skidLoader and truck and trailer back there. I didn’t see what sort of load he got out of it. Today, I did get the rest of it cut and split, and I am tired, there was the most of 3 cords in that pile. I try to avoid actually lifting these big chunks, sorta roll them over to the splitter, and roll them on to the hydraulic lift arm, raise it, and snatch it with a pickaroon. Then break things in half, then half again until they are manageable. The bark was ready to peel on this tree, so, I probably got a half of a cord of bark to dispose of. It did make a nice looking batch of firewood, with no bark.

Sloroll was famous for the green speedo. Now I could be wrong, it's been a long time, but I thought it was Butcher.
