The fair board president called up today with a wild idea. They want a removable barrier fence, to completely enclose the infield of the race track for control of admittance to whatever event they can rent it out for. I understand the fair board is having hard times and is looking for anything that will bring income. here is where it gets a bit odd, he must have seen something on the internet where they built a fence with sucker rods. That sounds pretty heavy and I figure my chances of finding oil field scrap is less than slim and a quarter mile of fence sounds like a lot. new steel is about four times what it used to be and this would be a big job, even if steel was free.
any ideas?
I think I will suggest driving steel fence posts and hanging orange plastic fence……

I did suggest corral panels, but I figure on the long straight stretches they would still need some extra supports. A quarter mile of panels? What would that cost? And it would take a whole barn to store them in

We see temporary chain link fencing set up on construction sites at times. Free standing with stabilizing feet to allow it to stand with out setting posts on asphalt parking lots. 8 feet tall and if I recall most are put up by rental company's. Just a thought, cost of fence rental fixed into any rentals you make. 13-1400 feet will be expensive anyway you look at it.

If the entire fairgrounds are already fenced in, just charge admittance at the main entry gate.

I would think insurance would rise, for havin people in the infield...

They do not race here any more. The racing, sulky racing, happens at the new casino a few miles away. But, they house and train horses here. It is good because it is close and the horse is not weary from a long ride. The casino did not have much in the way of stables, but I hear they are planning to build more, so, the future is kinda unpredictable for the fairground. So, the horse training and boarding is likely a big part of the fairgrounds financial survival, so, it can’t be jeopardized, not very much, anyhow. I have no idea how they are gonna cross the track, into the infield, without interfering with the training. The grandstand was demolished a few years ago and a new building was built as an expo center, pretty much guaranteeing that nothing resembling a grandstand will ever be there again. The fairgrounds is probably running out of useable space to develop because they do not actually own all the ground, and at this point in time could not afford it.
I figure they are fairly desperate, and hairbrained schemes are welcomed.
